Save 7th Period at CUHSD
A fundraising effort by the residents of the
Campbell Union High School District
to keep a full program of classes available for our students.
We Did It. Congrats To Everyone Involved !!!
We made it! Thank you to all who saved 7th Period. An official announcement and public turnover of the money raised will take place on Monday, August 9 at 1PM in the District Office. Each of the school sites will determine how to process notification and schedule changes. Band parents may wish to contact their Band Directors directly for more specific information regarding practices and camps.
Our Herculean effort is for one year only. The CUHSD Board voted last night to place a parcel tax of $85 per year for 5 years on the November ballot. Our community must support this parcel tax to ensure the wonderful programs already in place- including 7th period-beyond this next year.
Here is the real effect. The following programs and classes will be
cut altogether or reduced to a very small fraction of the current
size if we don’t raise the money and the board’s
six period maximum goes into effect:
- Science programs will be cut. The CUHSD students compete and excel
in the Synopsys Championship. The Science Research Methods class will be
cut.
- Art Programs and classes will be cut or reduced to such a small
size that they will not be offered.
- Journalism students will not be able to take Yearbook Class or
Newspaper Class.
- ROTC enrollment will be tremendously reduced or cut because
students will only be able to take six classes; ROTC is an
elective, an extra.
- Drama and Theater Arts will be cut or reduced to such a small size
that it will not be offered. These programs have been winning awards
and recognition.
- Choir will be cut or reduced to such a small size that it will not
be offered. The Choir programs have been winning awards and
recognition nationally and internationally.
- All Band programs will be cut or reduced to such a small size that
they will not be offered: Wind Ensemble won the GOLD in their last two
international competitions; 2003 was in Carniege Hall. Marching Band,
Jazz Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band will become a memory.
- SPORTS Programs will be reduced and/or cut because sports students
will be required to take PE AND the academics AND sports class - too
much for six periods.
- Leadership will be cut and/or reduced, this is the class the
students take to be class president, vice president, secretary and
treasurer.
The point is this: with a six-class limit students will only be able
to take enough classes to graduate from high school, not competitively
enter college.
Our high six schools, Branham, Del Mar, Boynton, Leigh, Prospect
and Westmont will become ADEQUATE schools.
Students, Parents, School Administrators and Teachers have attained
award winning levels of excellence in these nine departments by
working hard over many years.
